Stevenage end winless run thanks to late Dan Sweeney goal against Peterborough

Stevenage ended their barren run in League One by beating Peterborough United 1-0 at Broadhall Way.

Dan Sweeney got the only goal after 79 minutes, rising at the back post to nod in a Harvey White corner.

And it was a deserved success for Boro who will hope this first win in nine reignites their promotion push.

Stevenage were dominant in the first half but efforts from White and Sweeney, both from the edge of the area, were off target.

Lewis Freestone came the closest when the ball ran to him in the box and he got his attempt on target, but the impressive Lucca Mendonca was in the right place on the line to clear and the resultant scramble was bundled behind by the visitors.

The second half simply continued the pattern of the game with skipper Carl Piergianni and Jamie Reid both having attempts straight at Alex Bass.

But when the Posh goalkeeper needlessly gave away a corner, Sweeney headed home to break the deadlock.

The goal saw the visitors finally come to life but Filip Marschall was never tested as Boro saw out a long-awaited victory.
