Lee Grant admits Alfie May dismissal was pivotal in Huddersfield defeat

Lee Grant criticised Huddersfield’s discipline in an “unacceptable” 3-0 defeat at Wycombe.

The Terriers had started brightly at Adams Park and were the better of the two teams until Alfie May was shown a straight red card in the 25th minute.

The forward was sent off for a late two-footed lunge on Fred Onyedinma on the halfway line.

The Chairboys made the most of their man advantage as goals from Cauley Woodrow, Onyedinma and an own goal by Daniel Vost secured Wycombe a first home victory against Huddersfield since December 1994.

The Yorkshire outfit have now lost their last four games in all competitions, and Grant said: “It’s difficult as we’re once again talking about a game that was set out with one intention but ended up being a completely different game.

“I think it was unacceptable the way the game ended up, and I think it’s unacceptable the way the game was taken away from us.

“We can’t react the way we did, we can’t lose control the way we did, and we can’t lose our discipline the way we did as it cost us.

“The incident changed the game as we’re out of control in that moment and Alfie is out of control.

“If we can’t control our emotions we are going to find ourselves in these situations too often.”

Wycombe boss Michael Duff, who was sacked by Huddersfield back in March, believes his team “will only get better” after their fifth victory in eight games since he took over from Mike Dodds five weeks ago.

The Chairboys are now three points clear of the relegation zone and eight points off the play-off places.

Duff said: “I thought we were ruthless today, and that was something we spoke about during the week.

“At 0-0 it was a nip-and-tuck game as there wasn’t a lot in it as they’re a good team with good players.

“But when the red card happened – and it was a red card – we stepped on them and didn’t wander.

“The last five-six minutes were as pleasing as anything as we got them on the counter-press and moved the ball – this is something we wanted at 0-0 in the first minute.

“Lee Nicholls made some really good saves, but we hurt them from every angle possible, which is great.

“That’s 11 points from 18 – a good start – and we will get better.

“Without being arrogant, we’re settling with this formation now (4-3-2-1) and the players are giving me everything.

“They’re running, fighting. Can we be better? Yes, but from my point of view, all you can ask is that (effort).

“It was a complete performance.”
