Pete Wild hails Fleetwood for ‘finding way to win’ against Accrington

Fleetwood boss Pete Wild hailed his side’s character after they came from behind to beat Accrington 2-1 in a Lancashire derby.

Alex Henderson headed the visitors in front in the 11th minute as Stanley dominated the first half at Highbury.

But Ryan Graydon, who also missed a penalty, turned the game on its head in the second half as he found an equaliser before setting up Ched Evans’ decisive header.

“You could say the wind played a factor in the first half, but we didn’t win any tackles,” said Wild.

“I said in the week that Accrington would come for a fight and that’s exactly what happened.

“They won the fight hands down first half. Could have been two or three up, we didn’t get anywhere near them. We treaded water for 45 minutes.

“We’ve got a good set of men, we’ve got proper lads in there who can deal with adversity and things not going their way and do something about it.

“What they did do was keep themselves in the football match.

“I’d rather not go 1-0 down and then start playing, don’t get me wrong, but we’ve found a way to win.

“Good teams find a way to win and we’ve done that again.

“We’ve got that quality off the bench. Ched’s come on and got that goal.

“We needed more strength in depth. That’s what we targeted in the summer.

“We’ve got a good mix of experience and youth on the bench. It’s a good squad.”

John Doolan’s Stanley seemingly turned the corner when they stunned promotion-chasing Swindon 4-0 last weekend to end a four-game losing streak in all competitions.

But it was another loss on the road for the club, who have picked up just four points from a possible 21 away from home.

Doolan said: “The game should have been out of sight by half-time. It’s disappointing.

“You get a lead and have something to hold onto but you know they’re going to react in the second half.

“We were the better team by a mile. It was a game of two halves and that’s infuriating that we don’t maintain that performance.

“That’s the inconsistency of where we’re at. It’s the way we are at the minute.

“That performance last week, they’ve carried it on for an hour. But after that for whatever reason we come off it. Lack of concentration? I don’t know.

“We’ve spoken about it in the changing room. It’s fine margins.

“They have to do better because that’s what’s going to win you games.

“We keep going on about it. You want individual performances from the player first and foremost and then collectively as a team.”
