There is expected to be delays and disruptions to parcel deliveries in Ireland after the company behind major courier Fastway and two other supplies went into receivership.

The Nuvion Group operated Parcel Connect, Fastway Couriers Ireland and Nügo with 300 direct jobs under threat in Ireland as a result of the move. Hundreds of others jobs could be in the firing line at subcontractors and franchisees.

RTE has reported that a spokesperson for the company blamed inflation, rising operating costs and price pressures for the collapse. They also confirmed significant delays and disruption for those awaiting deliveries.

The spokesperson said: "Delays and disruption are envisaged and the receivers will work with retailers to minimise such delays.

"We want to sincerely thank our employees, franchisees and customers for their continued understanding and support during this difficult time."

An internal email sent to staff by the receivers told employees that they would not be paid beyond now and they are only expected to attend work if requested.

Jobs are under threat in a number of counties around Ireland. In Donegal, Fastway Couriers have a depot in Letterkenny which is understood to employ around half-a-dozen people.

According to Donegal Live, among the other companies affected were CBM Signs in Letterkenny, who sent out orders to Fastway Couriers on Tuesday afternoon.

“When they arrived back at the depot security personal and receivers were there to close Fastway down,” CBM said. “The receivership would not give back our orders back which I personally thought was very bad form.

“I felt sorry for the staff and self employed drivers who had no idea of this closure. One of them had just taken delivery of a brand new van ahead of the Christmas rush.”

CBM say they will appoint a new courtier and it will be “business as usual."

In Laois, where there is a Fastway depot in Portarlington, the situation has been described as "devastating."

According to Laois Live, a Portarlington-based Laois county councillor, Aidan Mullins, commented: "Devastating news this evening for Portarlington as Fastway Couriers is going into receivership. A massive loss of jobs as I'm told by an employee that about 300 people in total work for the Company.

"A meeting has been arranged by the Company with the workers for tomorrow at 12 noon when their position will become clearer but the outlook seems bleak," he said.
