A garda was taken to hospital after being attacked by a man with a knife while responding to a burglary.
At about 3.45am on Thursday, gardai from Blanchardstown station responded to a report of a burglary at business premises in Dublin 15.
Both gardai believed it was apparent that a burglary had taken place and they called colleagues for assistance.
As they searched the premises they encountered a man with “a bladed weapon” who gardai said became aggressive and threatening.
A Garda was injured in the encounter.
The bladed weapon was seized, along with 1,500 euro in cash.
The injured Garda, a man in his 20s, was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital for treatment to injuries described as not life-threatening.
He has since been discharged.
A man in his 30s was arrested and is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in Dublin.
Mark Ferris, for the Garda Representative Association in the Dublin Metropolitan Region, said: “It is with real concern that we acknowledge yet another incident in which a young garda was assaulted while carrying out their duties, this time during the arrest of an individual in possession of a knife at a suspected burglary in Blanchardstown.”
He added: “I wish to commend my colleagues for their courage and professionalism in the face of such adversity.
“Attacks on members of An Garda Siochana are entirely unacceptable and sadly, becoming far too common.
“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks our members face daily while carrying out their work.”
